Gyan Burman: His Life and Work

Gyan Burman was the eldest of three brothers. Focused and hard-working, he set a standard that his siblings strived to meet. Schooled at St Paul’s in Darjeeling, he spent a few months in St Xavier’s College in Calcutta before moving to the USA to study pharmacology and science at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science.

He returned with his degree in 1966, and my uncle, P.C. Burman, immediately began training him to manage production at the Dabur factory in Calcutta. It took him less than a year to take complete charge of the factory.

He enjoyed his social and club life in Calcutta, but nothing could prevent him from being at work by 8 a.m. every morning. He died in 2001 and the Gyan Burman Liver Unit (GBLU) was established in his memory at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi. Twenty two years have passed since the GBLU was started under the able guidance and leadership of Dr Samiran Nundy and I am pleased to see that we have accomplished whatever we set out to do.

During the past twenty years, the department has trained 135 Indian doctors from various states, from Kerala to Kashmir. International Fellows include doctors from Kenya, Mexico, Fiji, Turkmenistan, Sudan, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, the USA, Greece and Pakistan. The department has rented and furnished a flat for Fellows who come from outside Delhi. Besides training doctors from all over the world, we have published books, funded research papers, sponsored doctors for conferences. We have organized eight orations by eminent doctors from the world over, appreciated by the management of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. The department has published a number of books including 25 Annual Audits of the Department, Liver Transplantation in India, 10 years of SGLT, Residents’ Manual and Liver Transplant Handbook for Patients. Our name is well known and our efforts have borne results. Our family is proud of the achievements of the Unit and considers it a worthy memorial to a well- loved and respected man. I congratulate Dr Nundy and his team and wish them success.

What used to take millions of years of super-volcanic activities unfolded in just under 300 years due to industrialization. We know that Climate Change is not new for Earth, as hot and ice ages have kept on periodically occurring throughout our planet’s 4.5 billion years of age. However, humans have accomplished this change so fast that if our technological solutions cannot fix it in the next few decades then it would be too late.

Even though predicting the future for us is truly impossible and yet we can still feel the full impact of our actions even now. The myth that climate change’s worst impacts will be felt ages from now is both dangerous and highly susceptible to our today’s conditions. Most people are too busy with their lives to notice the changes that creep up at them. But we now fully understand that it is already affecting people worldwide in so many ways that revolutions in the near future may be inevitable.

So many species of plants and animals are dying each day that they are dying faster than we can even identify them. Usually, during these extinctions, animals have the time to evolve against such changes that unfold over millions of years. But, since we have done this in just over 300 years, most animals or plants stand no chance.

The world’s oceans are already deserts, and now what little oases were left are dying as we see coral reefs turning skeletal, shell creatures losing their calcium, and plastic slowly replacing the fishes. All these changes impact human life directly as we ourselves are dependent on most of these systems. Forest fires are ravaging California homes, and cities in China and India are choking with clouds of smog, while Australia and Europe burn in searing waves. Crops fail in Africa, and cyclones and typhoons ravage our coastlines. We break the limit of having the hottest year, every year. Climate refugees have already begun migrating while water scarcity increases.

All these pressures are mounting and the scientists have already rung the warning siren. If we don’t wake up and listen to it now, nobody knows the extent at which we can damage life on Earth.

Investing in empowering women opens the door of potential for the entire world. Women are an untapped resource in the fight against global issues. They are underutilised resources with the potential to improve livelihood, economic output, productivity, and even human life itself. The fact that women can achieve incredible things isn’t new or particularly surprising – but the fact that they can do so in the face of patriarchy, oppression, and inequality is a testament to their unwavering spirit and determination.

Many women have inspired and empowered other women to overcome the restrictions imposed by society. Even after so many decades, Mother Teresa continues to be a trailblazer in breaking down gender stereotypes around the world. Her selfless dedication to the poor and their education helped improve the lives of the marginalised. Savitribai Phule is another role model in the world of empowered women, empowering women. In India, her emphasis on secular education for social emancipation is a distinguishing feature of her personality. By getting to know her better, by understanding her struggles and hardships, we witness a life that not only changed the face of education in India but also enlightened humanity in its real essence.

At the intersection of science, medicine, and human rights, we see daily how women from different spheres all over the world continue to lead, innovate, and generate energy and resources for the global movement for justice and accountability. Bill and Melinda Gates write about the major insights they have discovered over their years of investing in the developing world and building the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, “All lives have equal value is not just a principle; it’s a strategy. You can create all kinds of new tools, but if you’re not moving toward equality, you’re not changing the world. You’re just rearranging it. When women have the same opportunities as men, families, and societies thrive. Obviously, gender equity unleashes women’s potential, but it also unleashes men’s potential.” So, an atmosphere of #EqualSamman is what we need to achieve to progress as a peaceful society.

For giving women the much-deserved ‘Equal Samman’, Mobius Foundation best NGO in India, is constantly working to empower women. We focus on women at the ground level through Project Aakar by counseling them for their reproductive health and the right to make informed decisions in planning their families. The Mobius Foundation has even launched a campaign and a webinar to raise awareness for a gender-equal society. In keeping with the UN theme of ‘Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow’, the campaign sought to comprehend the #BreakTheBias motto and its role in the workplace and daily life.

The webinar took place virtually on March 8th, 2022, from 3:00-4:30 PM. It comprised a panel of trailblazers who overcame societal obstacles to become who they are today.

We have only been asking this question, but never battled it. It has always
been a series of questions that has floated for years and decades. Yet, we have
no answers. But, do we really need just answers? We require concrete action for
a transformed future. While we skim through weather reports, articles and posts
over the internet, what we find are the numerous ways the human race is nearing
its doomsday. For answers, one is not looking for remedies or New year resolutions,
but action that is oriented towards inducing a safe surrounding within the
short framework that we have.

The stark challenges that we have been
struck with are countless, such as, ‘Earth’s surface is heating faster than
ever’, ‘the world emits 43 billion Co2 emissions a year’ etc. These reasons are
caused by the unequivocal role of humans, hence the excess heating and climate
extremes in places around the world. The presence of global warming itself has
predicted our futures in a world of suffering. Unless carbon dioxide is removed
from the atmosphere, temperatures will continue to rise. To limit global
warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, we must cut
fossil-fuel consumption in half by 2030 and completely phase out by 2050,
bringing total human carbon dioxide emissions to zero. Living through these
hard and hot times calls for an ultimate ‘cool off’ of the excess heat, and
this can only be achieved by limiting the human impact which in all moral
aspects is not ‘humanitarian’ but a casually cruel exploitation of all the
advantages we have in our surroundings for the sole purpose of man’s
‘development’.

So, what solutions do we have? The most
basic approach would be to work hard towards limiting the heating of the Earth.
The clearest approach would be to reduce energy-intensive consumption as fast
as we can. Additionally, our actions should also focus on fabricating renewable

Rather than extreme weather, irreversible loss of species and ecosystems will
be one of the worst consequences of climate change. Many species are on the
verge of extinction all over the world as a result of factors like heat, rain,
and sea-level rise. The rate of extinction is expected to increase with each
degree rise in surface temperature. To support this approach, 100% renewable

A Report By NITI Aayog

According to a report by NITI Aayog, a government-charted think tank in 2020 warned Delhi with other 20 cities that it could reach zero groundwater levels.

Underwater decline is a key challenge that India needs to resolve. India’s fast-growing suburbs & metropolitans with a rapid population demand and deserve an adequate water supply.

However, maintaining a clear water supply to its citizens raises critical questions about its leaders & making leadership tougher than ever.

Water is life. Without it, humans cannot survive. Without it, there would be no infrastructural, economical & nation growth. It is the basic need. If the country could not fulfill its basic needs, then how can it focus on other things? Therefore, the country needs to be focused on restoring underground water.

Can We Stop Water Crisis?

If India does not act fast, it could exhaust its groundwater. India needs to attempt long-term

For that, they need to avail these below written solutions:

1. Restoration of the country’s traditional water sources is one way to save its water.

2. The nation needs to apply porous pavement that could help rainfall seep into the ground.

3. The leaders of the country also need to focus on wastewater treatment & rainwater harvesting.

4. We must educate our citizens to use less water for daily domestic use & practice

sustainable lifestyle to restore ecosystems.

Mobius Foundation: Hydro Solar Panels and Atmospheric Water Generator

Water scarcity is a major issue in India. Pradip Burman, Chairman of the Mobius Foundation, aimed to tackle this problem by recharging the capacity of wells & ponds in the rural villages with its two initiatives.

Hydro Solar Panels Technology: It generates water from the atmosphere using solar technology.
Atmospheric Water Generators: SkyWater’s technology helps to store water with minimal maintenance. It is safe & next-gen technology that cleans water without wasting a drop.

Humans are sharply influencing the climate & the earth’s temperature by burning
fossil fuels, cutting down the forests & escalating agriculture.
This adds enormous pressure to the earth, soars the amount of greenhouse
gases in the atmosphere that ultimately leads to global warming. It traps the
sun’s heat by preventing it from leaking back into space.

Human activities are drastically surging the concentrations of some of the most
dangerous gases into the layers of the earth, which are:

● Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
● Methane
● Nitrous Oxide
● Fluorinated Gases

Fortunately, there are things we can do to fight against the climate crisis.

Preserving the earth starts with individual responsibility for future generations.

Here are some actions you can take to eradicate climate change:

Make Your Commute Green

Millions of people drive their vehicles to work. It is simply unavoidable in our modern era. However, the downside to this act is that millions of vehicles emit greenhouse gases that demolish the ozone layer.
Vehicle emissions are second in the top causes of climate emergencies. But, you
can use other options to make your commute to work eco-friendly. For that, use
public transport to cut down emissions. Riding your bike is another incredible way
to help restore our earth’s health. It doesn’t just help you reach work, but it is a
great way to also stay fit.

Be More Conservative with Energy Usage

Become more environmentally active by saving energy to prevent pollution. It
causes the power plants to expand less energy, which leads to the production of
greenhouse gases. This means you can cut down on energy usage in your
house.

Make sure you turn off lights & unplug devices when you are not using
them.

You can even replace your light bulbs with energy-efficient bulbs to save
electricity.

Recycle

Manufacturing plants emit greenhouse gases. It is an unavoidable act in the
production of goods that we use daily basis. However, there is an alternative,
recycling.
Recycling is a cost-effective & eco-friendly way that eliminates waste & does not
emit greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
Make sure you collect your discarded plastic bottles, paper, glass & electronics to
your local recycling center or scrap dealer.

Use Renewable Energy

Utilize renewable energy such as solar energy, wind energy, hydro energy,

geothermal energy & more to create a positive impact in your community. You

can encourage people to use this energy by educating them about how

renewable energy is better than fossil fuels.

Stop Wasting Food

Reducing food waste is the thing you can do to offer your efforts in lessening climate impact.

Food that is spoiled & disposed creates methane & affects greenhouse gas emissions. In this way, purchase limited food so that you can finish it before expiry date.

Eat Less Factory-Prepared Red Meat

Factory farms feed their cows grains, which force them to release methane into
the air. Adopting a plant-rich diet can help reduce methane. It is not completely
necessary to be a vegetarian. You just need to reduce the amount of meat that
can help lessen the methane gas into the atmosphere.

A Step Towards Sustainability by Mobius Foundation

The Mobius Foundation, a non-profit organization, is promoting environmental

The initiative also elevates ecological conservation through Project Sanjeevani &
